CGPA to percentage calculator
Convert CGPA to percentage or percentage to CGPA using official formulas from CBSE, Anna University, VTU, and other systems. Supports 4.0, 5.0, 7.0, and 10.0 scales.
How do I convert CGPA to percentage?
Converting CGPA to percentage is one of the most common calculations Indian students need after receiving results. The conversion formula depends entirely on your institution. This calculator supports the most common ones — select your grading system from the dropdown and your CGPA is converted automatically. Use the swap button to convert in the other direction when you need to find what CGPA matches a target percentage.
The six supported grading systems cover CBSE (10-point scale used in schools), Anna University (Tamil Nadu engineering), VTU (Karnataka engineering), Mumbai University (Maharashtra engineering), and two generic scales for other 10-point and 4-point GPA institutions.
Conversion formulas by institution
| Institution | Formula | Example (CGPA 8.5) |
|---|---|---|
| CBSE | CGPA × 9.5 | 80.75% |
| Anna University | CGPA × 10 | 85.00% |
| VTU | (CGPA − 0.75) × 10 | 77.50% |
| Mumbai University | (7.1 × CGPA) + 11 | 71.35% |
| Generic 10-point | CGPA × 10 | 85.00% |
| Generic 4-point (GPA) | (GPA ÷ 4) × 100 | — |
Notice that Mumbai University's formula produces a significantly lower percentage than other Indian universities for the same CGPA — a CGPA of 10.0 equals 82% under Mumbai's formula, not 100%. This is intentional, not a calculator error. Mumbai University uses this conservative conversion for its engineering CBCS program.
Percentage to CGPA conversion
The same calculator works in reverse. Use the swap button to convert percentage back to CGPA — useful when you have a target percentage in mind and want to know what CGPA you need, or when you have an old marksheet showing percentage and need to estimate the equivalent CGPA. The grading system dropdown applies the inverse formula automatically.

Why the CBSE formula is CGPA × 9.5
The CBSE formula for converting CGPA to percentage is CGPA × 9.5. This was established by CBSE as the standard multiplier for Class 10 board exam results on the 10-point grading scale. The multiplier 9.5 was derived empirically from the distribution of marks across subjects and is applied uniformly to all students.
Importantly, this means a perfect CGPA of 10 maps to 95%, not 100%. The midpoint of the top grade range in the CBSE system is 95.5%, and the multiplier was rounded down to 9.5 to produce a conservative but fair conversion. Other boards and universities use different multipliers because their grade-range definitions differ.
About the institution-specific formulas
Anna University: Per R-2021 regulations, percentage equals CGPA × 10. This applies to all current undergraduate engineering programs. The formula is straightforward — a CGPA of 8.5 maps to exactly 85%.
VTU: Standard formula (CGPA − 0.75) × 10 per official VTU notification, applies to 2015, 2017, and 2018 schemes. Newer 2021/2022 scheme students should verify with their college, as VTU occasionally revises conversion guidelines.
Mumbai University: Engineering CBCS uses (7.1 × CGPA) + 11, which is intentionally conservative compared to other universities. A perfect CGPA of 10 maps to only 82%, and a CGPA of 9 maps to 74.9%. This formula was adopted to make Mumbai University grades more conservative for international evaluation.
CGPA to Percentage: Formula Comparison by University
